Vista CHKDSK hangs/freezes at Stage 5 @ 84%

Hi, I have ran chkdsk  a few times now on a Dell Inspirion 1720 (Toshiba 160gb hdd). It allways freezes @ 84% on stage 5. Ran chkdsk from the vista recovery disc completed ok? I have also run a couple of third-party hdd apps and found nothing wrong.

Why would chkdsk running from the hard drive hang?

Are you running it because something doesn't work or just for fun? If something doesn't work, please provide some details. If everything is otherwise OK, don't do it again, as each time you run it you risk corrupting data.

Hi Chris, The laptop was originaly slow and an app wouldnt install thus the reason for the orginal chkdsk. Since i posted i have found Vista sp1 hasnt installed (failed windows update). So i suspect the reason for sp1 not installing, is the reason its slow. I will post it i find the cause.

OK. A little odd. Chkdsk often won't complete with the OS running as it can't access all the disk. In this event it will usually ask if you want to  schedule a check at next reboot. For it to hang, this suggests it is encountering an unknown error, which is likely a failed spot on the disk which is marked as in use or a crosslinked area where it just chases its tail forever. Can you end chkdsk when it hangs, or is the machine unresponsive? If you can end it, it may be that it hasn't hung, but is just taking a long time to recover the error it has found. Try leaving it running overnight, you never know...

Hi chris, Manually installed sp1 and was ok. Two other updates wouldn't install .NET and Live assistant log on .Tried clearing the Software distripution cache, no go.  Found this solution for those probs at
http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/197637-error-code-80070652-a.html which fixed it. Who needs Del Support anyway :)

Still Hangs:(

A: No you cant end the chkdsk, i have to hit the button to shutdown.

I have done a full diag with the dell diagnostic no probs.

A: I would try leaving it overnight, but the fact that the test completes from the dvd vista recovery suggests the hard drive ok? Like you say "odd".  Apart from this anomaly, NOW everything seems fine.

Would any nastiesbe able to start before chkdsk (the chkdsk installed on the harddrive)?(combofix found an autorun.inf in the system32 folder and a service but that hasnt made any difference)  .
Dell stuff?

I cant give the laptop back without knowing whats causing this, very starnge.

I think i will try a memory test next.

Regards Steve
