Frame Relay encapsulation without a Frame-Relay Switch

I'm doing a lab where I have 3 routers with 2 interfaces on each router in a triangle configuaration (something similiar to this http://www.net-authors.com/nww/2009-04-15-2.jpg) they are all connected via link with HDLC, PPP and Frame-Relay encapsulation. I did another lab when doing just Frame Realy and I would have another router that would act as a FrameRelay swicth that would forward frames from one router to the other. In this lab here though, I don't have a FR switch in beetwen the two routers that are connected with Frame Relay enacpsulated link. Is it possible to do it that way?

I am afraid that if you dont have a fr switch it is not possible to emulate frame relay. There is another solution but it requires hardware  the adtran switch.

But you can download the gns 3 which is a great simulator. You can load real IOS there and you can simulate any topology!!!!!

Hope it helps

You can do a simple back-back frame-relay link

RTRA
Interface Serial 0
 encap frame-relay
no keepalive  <-- this is IMPORTANT!
interface serial 0.16 point-to-point
 frame-relay interface-dlci 16
 ip address 192.168.199.1 255.255.255.252

RTRB
interface serial1
 encap frame-relay
 no keep
interface serial 1.16 point-to-point
 ip add 192.168.199.2 255.255.255.252

do I need to have a similar line ( frame-relay interface-dlci 16) for the RTRB?

Yes. Sorry I left it out..

np, I will be setting it up soon, so will let you know how it goes

so is this below the complete configuration?

RTRA
Interface serial 0
 encap frame-relay
no keepalive  <-- this is IMPORTANT!
interface serial 0.16 point-to-point
 frame-relay interface-dlci 16
 ip address 192.168.199.1 255.255.255.252

RTRB
interface serial 1
 encap frame-relay
 no keepalive
interface serial 1.16 point-to-point
 frame-relay interface-dlci 16
 ip add 192.168.199.2 255.255.255.252

Yes. Depending on the physical interface, you may also have to specify clocking on one end. Is it serial with DTE/DCE cable pair, or WIC-T1's or what?

serial DCE/DTE, so I will set clock on the the DCE end

RTRA
Interface serial 0
 encap frame-relay
no keepalive  <-- this is IMPORTANT!
interface serial 0.16 point-to-point
 frame-relay interface-dlci 16
 ip address 192.168.199.1 255.255.255.252
clock rate 64000

RTRB
interface serial 1
 encap frame-relay
 no keepalive
interface serial 1.16 point-to-point
 frame-relay interface-dlci 16
 ip add 192.168.199.2 255.255.255.252

Set the clock rate on the major interface, not the subinterface.

Interface serial 0
 encap frame-relay
 no keepalive
 clock rate 64000

interface serial 0.16 point-to-point
 frame-relay interface-dlci 16
 ip address 192.168.199.1 255.255.255.252

worked! now I need to conf PPP and HDLC

HDLC should work be default but it's not

I have

R3
interface Serial0/1
 ip address 172.16.0.6 255.255.255.252

and

R2
interface Serial0/0
 ip address 172.16.0.5 255.255.255.252
 clock rate 64000

am I missing something?

can't ping one another

lrmooreCommented:
That should be all you need for HDLC. take a look at sho interface output to make sure they are both HDLC encap

that was a layer 1 problem, lose cable :) hdlc works now

now :-) more problem, ppp with chap and pap

unable to ping

debug ppp auth and debug nego output

*Mar  1 05:45:49.455: Se0/1 LCP: I CONFREQ [Closed] id 30 len 14
*Mar  1 05:45:49.455: Se0/1 LCP:    AuthProto PAP (0x0304C023)

*Mar  1 05:45:49.459: Se0/1 LCP: Dropping packet, state is Closed

one of the interfaces shows

Encapsulation PPP, LCP Closed, loopback not set

on the other end

Encapsulation PPP, LCP Listen, loopback not set

the same with pap and chap

i did shut/no shut on both and for some time it would be

Encapsulation PPP, LCP Listen, loopback not set

but then it switched to close

when i tried to configure with chap the user name and password in sh run on one router would show

R3# username R2 password 0 cisco

and the other one

R2# username R3 password 7 3u9hkh95723

why is it different on one router?

i typed on both username Rx password cisco

thanks for all your help
