Enabling all mouse buttons on Trust MI-6950R with Ubuntu 8.10

I'm trying to get all of the mouse buttons on my Trust MI-6950R to work with Ubuntu 8.10. The mouse has left/right mouse buttons, the scroll wheel (which can tilted left/right as well), zoom in and zoom out buttons, and forward/back buttons. Only the scroll wheel and left/right mouse buttons work with this entry in xorg.conf:

Section "InputDevice"
      Identifier "Configured Mouse"
      Driver "mouse"
      Option "CorePointer"
EndSection

So I researched a little on ubuntuforums and Google and came up with some new stuff to try. First, I tried the command: cat /proc/bus/input/devices (full output in the code section). When I did this, I noticed this entry in particular:

I: Bus=0003 Vendor=04fc Product=0801 Version=0111
N: Name="USB Multi-Smart Mouse"
P: Phys=usb-0000:00:12.0-2/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:12.0/usb3/3-2/3-2:1.0/input/input4
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=kbd mouse2 event4
B: EV=1f
B: KEY=837fff002c3027 bf00444400000000 f1f0001 f848a27c000 667bfad9415fed 8e000000000000 0
B: REL=1c3
B: ABS=100000000
B: MSC=10

Looks like what I'm looking for. So next, I tried to run "xev" to figure out the buttons section of the xorg.conf. The button results look like this:

Left Main: 1
Center (Scroll Button Pushed): 2
Right Main: 3
Scroll Up: 4
Scroll Down: 5
Wheel Tilt Left: (no button or event shown when pressed)
Wheel Tilt Right: (no button or event shown when pressed)
Zoom In: (no button or event shown when pressed)
Zoom Out: (no button or event shown when pressed)
Side Button/Back: 8
Side Button/Forward: 9

Counting the wheel tilting and all, the mouse has 11 buttons. Given that, I changed my xorg.conf to this:

Section "InputDevice"
      Identifier "Configured Mouse"
      Driver "mouse"
      Option "Protocol" "evdev"
Option "Dev Name" "USB Multi-Smart Mouse"
      Option "Dev Phys" "usb-*/input0"
      Option "Device" "/dev/input/event4"
      Option "Buttons" "11"
      Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

I then restart X. When I get to the login screen, the mouse doesn't respond at all. I can move it, but the cursor doesn't go anywhere. I hit CTRL-ALT-F5 and changed the config back to the original one, restarted X, and the mouse started working fine again.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong to cripple the mouse. I'm also not sure of how to get the zoom in/out buttons working, or how exactly the ZAxisMapping should look. Would the scroll up/down, zoom in/out, and tilt left/right all be entered under ZAxisMapping, or just the scroll up/down?

My xorg.conf:

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier	"Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier	"Default Screen"
	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
	Device "Configured Video Device"

ZAxisMapping "4 5 6 7" and so on...
Avatar of elorc

I tried changing ZAxisMapping to both "4 5 6 7" and "4 5 6 7 10 11" but neither had an impact on the issue. The mouse still does not function at all when using the second configuration I posted. I tried replacing event4 with mouse2 to see if that had a difference and that didn't work either.
Do you have multiple mouses?

No, although I have a Nostromo n52 gamepad attached (I'm not sure if that is part of the issue):

Check what X -configure produces with gamepad detached...
Also post /var/log/Xorg.0.log - if it reads from event device that it has 10 buttons.

In the code section, I've also posted the results of cat /proc/bus/input/devices when the Nostromo pad is not connected. I noticed that it shows the handlers are "kbd mouse1 event2" now instead of "kbd mouse2 event4"

OK - it reads config from event device
Probably it fixes with spec of 1st device in error.
Are your buttons working now?

No, the mouse is doing the same thing. It just doesn't work at all when I try to use the configuration to enable the mouse buttons.

I'm using evdev as the protocol because that's what I had seen being used by others. I don't know if that's necessarily correct though. Is there another protocol I should try using, and if so, how will it change the other lines for the mouse's config?
How it does not work? All diagnostics so far show it does...

run xev in X11, then press buttons above its window. Are they received by X11 ?

Oh that xorg.0.log is with the default configuration in place. The mouse works, except for the zoom in/out buttons and the forward/back buttons on the left side of the mouse. When I have xev running, if I press the zoom in/out buttons on the mouse, nothing shows up. The forward/back buttons on the left side of the mouse register in xev as buttons 8 and 9, but if I try to use them in any programs or games that I have (for example, WoW), they don't work. I can't map them to anything. Under Windows, however, I can.

Now if I use this configuration below in xorg.conf, the mouse doesn't work at all. No buttons respond and the cursor won't move.

Section "InputDevice"
      Identifier "Configured Mouse"
      Driver "mouse"
      Option "Protocol" "evdev"
Option "Dev Name" "USB Multi-Smart Mouse"
      Option "Dev Phys" "usb-*/input0"
      Option "Device" "/dev/input/event2"
      Option "Buttons" "9"
      Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

Note that I changed the device to /dev/input/event2 (this is because I tried it again without the Nostromo pad attached). I've also tried setting ZAxisMapping to "4 5", "4 5 6 7", "4 5 6 7 8 9", and "4 5 8 9" with no difference in behavior.

I'm not at that computer at the moment, but when I get back to it I will post an xorg.0.log with the above configuration in place (when the mouse doesn't work at all) in case maybe that will help.

Okay, without the Nostromo pad attached and using this configuration:

Section "InputDevice"
      Identifier "Configured Mouse"
      Driver "mouse"
      Option "Protocol" "evdev"
Option "Dev Name" "USB Multi-Smart Mouse"
      Option "Dev Phys" "usb-*/input0"
      Option "Device" "/dev/input/event2"
      Option "Buttons" "9"
      Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

The mouse does not function at all. I hit CTRL-ALT-F5 and logged in so I could check the Xorg.0.log file. What I found was this:

(**) Option "Protocol" "evdev"
(EE) Configured Mouse: Unknown protocol "evdev"
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Configured Mouse"
(II) UnloadModule: "mouse"

(the complete Xorg.0.log is posted in the attached code section)

I don't know why it's saying evdev is unknown. If I look under Package Manager, I see that "xserver-xorg-input-evdev" is installed (version 1:2.0.99+git20080912-0ubuntu6).

Are you sure your mouse is handled by evdev ?
Stop display manager and run X -configure to see if it is evdev or mouse.

I don't know. I just saw that evdev was used in a case that resolved this issue with a similar Trust mouse. I ran X -configure and it generated this:

Section "ServerLayout"

So in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, I modified the mouse section to look like:

Section "InputDevice"
      Identifier "Mouse0"
      Driver "mouse"
      Option      "Protocol"      "auto"
      Option      "Device"      "/dev/input/mice"
      Option      "Buttons"      "9"
      Option      "ZAxisMapping"      "4 5 6 7"
EndSection

When I restart X, the mouse works. I ran xev and tested the buttons... the zoom in/out buttons still do not work. The forward/back buttons (8 and 9) show up in xev, but I can't map them or the zoom in/out buttons in WoW. I also tried the mouse configuration without the Option Buttons line just to see if it made a difference,  but the behavior was the same.
Now post extract from Xorg.0.log relating mouse initialization...
Something is wrong about those extra buttons then.
wth is WoW ?

Sorry about taking a little while to respond. WoW = World of Warcraft. :D

After I rebooted the system (keeping the new configuration in place), the forward/back buttons are working in Firefox. I can't map them to anything in WoW however (do I need to do something so that they pass a specific keystroke? I'm not sure how to do this if so). The zoom buttons do not work at all, still (not in Firefox or WoW). xev still does not recognize them. All of these buttons work properly under Windows though, so I know the buttons are functional.

Dumb question... what's the shortcut allocator?
Something like global-keyboard-shortcut-bindings...
Where you can assign key for applications menu, or actions to Win keys

I can't seem to find that. Under System | Preferences, I see Keyboard Shortcuts. It just allows me to assign shortcuts to a list of preset actions. I don't see anything about the mouse button assignments.

Looks like hopeless at best... I am with that other desktop environment which takes mouse buttons for shortcuts, and lets copy/paste mouse events from xev. Sorry for being of so little help.

Thanks for all your help. I'll either have to live with things as the way they are or try a different mouse.
