DNS Wildcard on XP

I' trying to setup a web dev environment on a local network at work.

What I'm trying to achieve is the following:
- having multiple web sites on my dev boxes using something along the lines of site1.devbox1, site2.devbox1, etc.
So when a new web site is being developped on my devbox1 all I'll have to do is set it up in IIS with the proper hostname and then I'll be able to have my other boxes reach it by simply using the hostname.

- If I add another devbox in my network, all I want to have to do is upadte a configuration file on all the other devboxes with the wildcard *.newdevbox

This setup will enable everyone on the network to see the web sites in dev amongst themselves and will also enable our IE6/IE7/IE8 boxes to test without any config required.

All my dev boxes are running Vista Ultimate. I have access to a Simple DNS server with a domain outside my network and I know I could set this up but I would rather keep the setup inside my network.
I know wildcards can't be used in the host file in windows, is there something easy that could be done to implement this ?

You really need a DNS server for that kind of thing, I guess it's going to be too much to set one up inside the network?

    thanks for your comment.
I was looking for some "easier" route as I'm not the sys admin inside the company and getting these things approuved is always hard ;)
I'll take everyone's silent and the fact that that's also what I thought to be the only way :)
