.mts files from Canon VIXIA HF10a in Windows Movie Maker?

Hi Everyone,

Just got a Canon VIXIA HF10a, and recorded some stuff to the hard drive. Went to pull it out with Windows Movie Maker, and I can't seem to open the .mts files.

I googled for a good hour, and all I find is contradictory information, trojan codecs, and general spam. Does anyone know what codec/program I need to install to be able to import .mts files into Movie Maker?

That Canon shoots and outputs file in AVCHD format.  There are a number of available encoders and editors for it, though there is a lack of easy to use free ones.

FFDShow is an all-around decoder that can be used in some host applications to convert it.

Nero will process it.

Splash will also play it, and the pay versions will enable exporting to standard formats.  It is available here:

Outside of those, any of the major editors listed on the AVCHD Wiki page will process, edit, and convert these files:

The Windows Movie Maker application is not compatible with the .M2TS file format.

The .M2TS file format is a High-definition video file format.

You can use the Sony Vegas Software to convert the .M2TS to the MPEG2/ MPEG1.

You can download the trial version of the Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Software to perform the above function.

Good luck.
