Install a new instance of SQL Server

I have SQL Server installed on my desktop but for reasons of having to uninstall an old version of SQL Server and Visual Studio, I do not have any instances on the server engine.  i.e. there is no default SQLExpress instance when I open up SQL Server Config Manager.

How do I create a new instance?  I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling but although SQL Server says it successfully reinstalled, there's still no new instance.  How can I do it manually?

during installation, you get asked for a instance name.
you have to specify a different instance name, and there you go.

See that's what I thought.  But it doesn't ask me.

I go through the installation and on the Features Selection I have "Instance Features", "Shared Features" and "Redistributable Features" as well as a "Shared Features Directory". I can click on those, but all it has is an explanation.  There's nowhere I can set any name for an instance.

I don't suppose I want to set up a cluster node do I?  I assume not but I thought I would ask anyway.

I see.  It is the express edition.  Do you have any references on how to edit the config?
If you select the Hide advanced configuration options check box, the Service Account, Collation Settings, Instance Name, and User Instances pages do not appear during setup.
