Hi,

1) This is related to the CCNA Exam.
2) This is the problem discussed at one of the prep test.
3) The question: " In a Frame Relay Environment, what is the function of the DE bit?"
4) The given answer: The indentification of frames that are transmitted above the CIR
5) My question: i) What is " DE bit"?, ii) What is the "CIR"?
6) Thank you

CIR - Committed Information Rate,    DE - Discard Eligibility bit.
When you have frame relay, the provider will give you a committed information rate. You may have 1.544 Mbps capability, but the provider only guarantees 1Mbit. When the provider's frame relay cloud becomes saturated (due to over subscription) only 1Mbps will pass through guaranteed. Other packets over this CIR will have the DE bit set and can be potentially discarded.
