PoE (Power over Ethernet), is it safe to plug into a normal computer? Will that damage the component?

    Accepted Solution

You to plug a computer into a network switch that supports PoE?  Yes.  It should be fine.  Otherwise PoE switches would be only for very specialized devices (I have a client with Cisco switches that support PoE so that their VoIP systems don't need AC adapters. Some ports are connected to phones... others directly to computers and other switches.

    Assisted Solution

You should ensure correct wiring of your Ethernet cable, of course.

But yes, it's safe to plug a normal computer Ethernet card into a port that supports POE, whether EEE 802.3af   or (pre-standard) Cisco PoE.
    And it is commonly done.

If the device does not support operation as a PoE powered device, additional voltage won't be negotiated.
