Win XP Activation Problem

I have a Win XP Pro box that I installed a BIOS update on successfully and rebooted.

After the reboot and arriving on the select a user to login screen. I choose a user and I receive an error that says "A problem has prevented windows from accurately checking the status of the license for this computer'

To proceed, your copy of windows must be activated with Microsoft. Do you want to activate windows now?"

Whether i choose "yes" or "no" it goes no where because this computer does not have access to the internet.

Even when booting to safe mode same problem.

Any ideas on how i can get this activated without an internet connection.

Do you still have the disk? you could do a non-distructive restore of XP.

How about phone activation?

You can activate windows by phone.
This is taken from the Microsoft website.

How to activate Windows XP by phone
To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

   1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Activate Windows.

Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area.
   2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.
   3. Click Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement, click Back, and then click Next.
   4. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.

Note The number appears now and differs based on the location that you select.

   5. When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.
You have successfully activated your copy of Windows.

If that does work than click "start" then "run", then type in
c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

and follow the steps above.

Hope that helps.

Lol, not reading the question properly...

hmmm...

if you can access the command prompt by using the F key while booting, tpye:

c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

that will get you to the windows activation screen, then you should be able to choose activate via phone, and the step will be explained to you on screen.

Sorry about the mix up before.

I won't let me get to a desktop (normal or safe mode). whether you click on yes or on no it just brings you back to the error box with the yes or no choice. Never seen this before. In the past it would bring up the activation screen and give you the choices to activate to Internet or phone, never get that screen tho.

Press F8 key while booting and choose "safe mode with command prompt", it will allow you to access the command line interface. then type:

c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

that will get you to the windows activation screen, then you should be able to choose activate via phone, and the step will be explained to you on screen.

Answer to lucidica = You cannot activate a MS Product in "Safe Mode"
Answer to MikeGGG = Can't get to screen, which is where you would enter the activation code given to you over the phone.
Answer to squlkill999 = "unable to find XP Pro disk anywhere on customers site" will try when i get an xp pro install disc. Repair will not work as activation database (wpa.dbl) is not part of repair, aka it will not put new one out there for you...

before trying the following please enter your bios and check the date and make sure it is correct. if not fix the date and reboot.

if you are not familar with or have a way to access tools such as winternals this option may take quite a bit of effort.
you will need a copy of
winternals 2005
windows xp or a way to download a copy of wpa.dbl
Method 2: Manually remove the script that interferes with Windows activation found at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312295/en-us
instead of useing windows to edit the registry boot from a winternals disk and modify the registry that way.
the file can be put on a thumbdrive just make sure the thumbdrive is in the computer before you boot from the winternals disk.

Thanks for the input everyone, after much searching this is what i came up with.
Multiple problems causing multiple problems..
1. BIOS revision on the board was 0302 (current level is 2302)
2. Entire chipset was original off the MOBO disc (ancient would be an understatement)
3. Updates being applied to an unstable system.
4. applied XP SP3 to system which caused major issues.
5. fix to #4 was to update BIOS and Chipset (should have done that first)
6. After flashing the BIOS and rebooting error began to show up.
7. Between BIOS Updates and SP updates XP believed that enough changes had been made to the system to warrant the "ya need to activate this copy of windows" process to start up, at which time it looped and was never able to get back in to a desktop.
8. Made decision to stop fixing (could have fixed it alot more) and just wipe and start from a solid base, which has eliminated all problems and have a very stable system now.

The solution I found was to install IE 8.  After saying YES to activate, it did, and all is well.  (Downloaded IE8 on another computer obviously)
