PC Restarting

hi i have this acer desktop pc with windows xp home. some one recently tried to install avg internet security 8.5, but they did not uninstall the previous anti virus. Every time i switch it on it gets to the desktop screen and looks and sounds like its running the start up objects, after about a minute the computer restarts. I have managed to boot with the UBCD (ultimate boot CD) and am currently running a spyware scan (just in case), does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing the problem.

Can you start the system in safe mode? If so you could try uninstalling one or both AV's using the control panel/add remove programs or use system restore to a time before installing AVG.

try to go under Safe Boot and right click my computer > Properties > Advanced Tab > under Startup and Recovery, click on "Settings" button > under System Failure > untick the Automatically restart

Next time it should show a blue screen with some information, let us know what information under the blue screen.

i have uninstalled all other antivirus software leaving just AVG 8.5, i have also unticked the automatic restart under system failure and this is the message that was displayed:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_MONPAGED_AGED

(information on checking hardware and software - recently installed)

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x00000050 (0xE585D91D, 0x00000000, 0x8053CE32, 0x00000002)

This STOP error could have many possible causes: bad RAM, faulty hardware, incompatible software (including anti-virus!) etc.

Check for *.dmp files in the c:\windows\minidumps folder; take the last 3-4, rename them from .dmp to .txt and attach them here as a file attachment.

In the meantime, disable AVG and check if the error still occurs.
Also, get Memtest86 (http://www.memtest.org) and run a memory test for a couple of hours.

i stand corrected , i reinstalled the AVG internet security and am getting a similar error message.

Well, the culprit is known: some driver/module inside AVG obviously is incompatible with some other part of your system.
If you wish to continue using AVG, upload your latest *.dmp file; there is a good chance that the faulting module will be indicated in it.

You could then check the AVG forums or their support for known issues or fixes.

agree ..... AVG could cause for incompatible as well (I did tried once before and till now still feel not good to use .....) ...... IT is better you can inform the AVG inorder for them to realise the problems that occur in their software then they can improve it .... Cheers

thanks guys, i'm running a memtest and that seems to be fine, i will get the.bmp file for you guys to have a look at, and i will uninstall the internet security and install the standard antivirus to see if that works, the previous antivirus was AVG 7.5 so i know that AVG can work on the system.

It's .DMP, not .bmp ;)

AVG 7.5 was fine. I used it, too, for a long time.
But then they came up with all those changes in version 8, and I heard all sorts of horror stories about crashes and horrible lag being caused by it, so I changed to Avast! a year ago, and that has never given me any concerns whatsoever.

The STOP error is not caused by AVG directly, but by "HSFHWCD2.sys" in connection with the USB port driver.
The faulty driver seems to belong to a USB fax modem.

Update its drivers, and check if they still conflict with AVG 8.

i have uninstalled the fax modem but the pc was still restarting. i then uninstalled AVG internet security and installed the standard AVG antivirus instead. At the moment there do not appear to be any problems so i will more than likely get a refund for the internet security and inform them of the problem.
