Which 'back up to the existing media set' should I use?

I need to create a backup file for a database.  I am trying to do this using SQL Server Mgmt. Studio.  I know that I need to use Back up to the existing media set option, but not sure which option I should take between 'Append to the existing backup set' and 'Overwrite all existing backup sets'.   I remember that one of DBAs recommended me to use 'Overwrite all existing backup sets' before.  However, I want to make sure that it is the right choice.
Can anybody explain the difference between two and when to use each option?

These two articles describe what the two types mean and are more often used when doing backups to tape backups or some kind of media like that.  Most people do backups to disk and Name the different backups so the DBA recommendation to use Overwrite is pretty common and should probably work for you unless you are writing to tape.
