Why not try their free Visual Studio Express products?  I remember the included documentation being quite thorough with Express 2005.  They also were perfectly fine for quite an array of development, unless add-ins are required.

Of course if you are planning on developing products which you intend to sell for profit, then the licenses of the Express editions will prohibit you from doing that--not to mention deployment projects are excluded from the list of templates included in Express editions.

If you are planning on develping professional products which you intend to sell, then yes, VS2008 is a good option for you to do this. If you don't plan on using LINQ or the 3.x frameworks, you might even get away with purchasing VS2005.
