Hi all,

I have a windows XP SP2  media center edition Dell computer that when I go to task manager,  networking, it says no active network adapters found.  I did a Windows repair, I ran winsock fix and dial-a-fix.  Still no resolution.  I cannot ping , error is unable to contact IP driver.  I cannot run IPconfig /all.  Error is , An internal error occurred,  the request is not supported.  Unable to query host name.

I have scanned for virus, none found using webroot and Avast.

I don't know where to go with this.

Can you help me?

If you have the driver disk, try reinstalling the network card. Also, verify in device manager that your network card is installed and enabled.

Hi Hmare,

I already reinstalled the NIC and actually installed a USB one as well just to test it out.  Same issue.  I download updated driver from Dell web site.  Device manager shows the network cards are installed and working correctly.

Hi all

I found out what the issue was causing all these problems.  I ran combofix, it found that there was a rootkit installed which it was able to remove.  I then installed Malware Bytes anti malware and ran that.  It found 7 other pernicious virus and spyware which it was able to remove.  I rebooted and now I can browse the web.

I downloaded and installed CleanUp!  I also ran Dial a Fix.  The adapters appear in task manager and the network connection is ok now as well.

Thanks for your input.  All the issue had to do with the rootkit.

Hi to the moderator,

As you can see I found the solution myself.  I think it is a valuable answer to have in the EE database.  Can you keep the question and answer but not award the points?

Let me know,
