maxtor one touch II with retrospect -- recovery options

I have a user who was backing up religously.  Their system failed.

I have restored the system to a working os (xp home -- original media)
I have the maxtor one touch USB
I have downloaded the Retrospect Express HD for this model
when my mouse hovers -- it says "unlicensed"
non of the options are available when I open retrospect express HD
0 restore points available
Unlicensed
the setup button is enabled, but does nothing when pressed

The drive is visible and clearly has a retrospect archive on there

There must be a way to recover from this mess.
any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Here is the skinny on what Maxtor recommended --

First I contacted Maxtor online "chat" support
they provided me a download / FTP site for the One-touch III software
yes I have a one-touch II
un loaded the old software
loaded the new software
all worked fine
