How to configure Gnome/Ubuntu in order to switch desktops with mouse?

I'd like to map two extra buttons on my mouse (scrollwheel left/right) so that the desktops switch.
Hint: I am not using compiz.

You cannot in Gnome, you can only enter raw codes in KDE

Do you see events from extra mouse buttons using xev?
Rest in Desktop/Preferences/Global Shortcuts

1) yep :-)
2) nope, this panel allows only keyboard shortcuts. (or maybe there is a "symbolic name" for the mouse.buttons 6/7 .. but i don't know that ..)
