Adobe Contribute - Access Denied!!??

We've recently demoted our old domain controller / intranet servr (and promoted another one of course) and everything went fine, except for some permission issue on the old DC, with regards to permissions on the intranet.
The first thing that we noticed was, a password was required to access the intranet. Fixed that.
Then we noticed that all of the files were set to READ-ONLY. Fixed that.

Now, we're having some strange issues with Contribute.
We've been getting the following errors:
1. Access denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem.
2. contribute access denied. the file may not exist or there could be a permission problem

I've been trouble-shooting it on and off for a few days. The 'main' user can actually use and edit, but stll gets the 1st error. Contribute creates a LCK file but, when you publish, gives you this error, but does ACTUALLY save the changes.

Anybody have any ideas on how I can fix this for good?

Thanks!
E.D.

It certainly sounds like the Contribute site definitions are missing/corrupt.

Try removing Contribute compatibility via Dreamweaver and then rebuilding it.

jason1178,

Thanks for your adivse.
The only one who uses DW is me, and it's an old version.
(I guess what I'm trying to say is, how do I do this??)

Also... could the read/write issues have affected the "_mm" folder or the "MMWIP"?
I understand that these are needed and may cause an issue.

Any advise?

Thanks again!

>> and it's an old version.

That's a problem because recreating Contribute access will not be easy with an older version of DW.  Contribute users will either lose features or be unable to connect.

>> Also... could the read/write issues have affected the "_mm" folder or the "MMWIP"?

Corruption potential, yes.

>> I understand that these are needed and may cause an issue.

They would get rebuilt upon site synch though.

>> Any advise?

Ideally, Contribute and DW would be running at the same version or DW is ahead of Contribute.  When Contribute is ahead of DW and Contribute created the connection, you will see this behavior.  I'm not sure there is a fix for you here.

jason1178,

This morning a uninstalled and reinstalled the MM Contribute Publishing Server.
So far, so good.... however after editting 10 pages, the user did the same error.
"contribute access denied. the file may not exist or there could be a permission problem"

I simpy opened the file on my notebook, in DW8, made a quick change and saved it.
Then the user was able to publish it.
The file didn't appear to be locked....

What would cause these random issues?
What a pain in the butt! :-)

Thanks again for your help!

Hang on.

Are you using plain old Contribute or the Contribute Publishing Server?

Oops... users are using CS3 and CS4. Using CPS to manage users.

Potentially.  CPS operates under different rules than just Contribute/Dreamweaver access and that could be the cause of the problems with your copy of DW (too old).

You might be out of luck here.

Oh... I thought CPS and contribute were to be used in concert.
Should I unistall CPS and just have the staff use Contribute?

Thanks!

from wiki;
Contribute consists of two products, a client for editing, and of a "publishing server" that Adobe describes as "complementary". The system requirements, and what features of Contribute are activated or enhanced by the use of the publishing server are not made clear by the Contribute Web site.

They are two different products.  CPS extends and advances the functionality of Contribute but it is not necessary for basic editing schemes.

Excatly, but CPS shouldn't cause this error, correct?
'access denied. the file may not exist or there could be a permission problem'

It seems arbitrary and without cause.
Any thoughts on how to approach the trouble-shooting?

Thanks again! :-)

Incorrect.  It can cause problems when you are trying to use it with three different versions of software.

I don't use it, so I can't really comment further.

There is a test available to you:

Set up a new site and enable "normal" Contribute compatibility and see if the problem persists.
