How do I turn off update links and links could not be updated message boxes?

I'm running code to update a group of cells on about 500 spreadsheets that have active links to other sheets. I used Application.AskToUpdateLinks = False to turn off the message box asking if I want to update links but I'm getting a message box stating links could not be updated.
What can I do to prevent both message boxes and maintain active links when the update code is finished running?

Added VB Script as a zone, need any suggestions you all can offer!

In C++ I possibly would create a thread which was monitoring the message boxes and which would close them automatically.

But probably it is easier to set the silent property if available.
