Inexpencive NIC that works in Server 2008

I need to find a solid PCI NIC that works with Server 2008 to a test system. I went through Windows Compatiblity List and most cards listed are newer model cards. I purchased a D-LInk 1GB card and it loads, but will not work. Is there someone who has set up Windows 2008 server with a inexpensive PCI card that works out of the box?

I have used the PWLA8391GT Nics from Intel without issue
I have used them on Vmware ESX as well as Windows 2008, although I can't recall if it worked "out of the box" or if I had to get a driver from Intel's site.
