PC/SC hardware/software compatibility?

I'm developing a smart card application in VB.Net - the hardware I'm using to test with is an ACR38 Smart Card Reader, what I need to know, is if I create an application based on PC/SC will this mean that the application will work with any smart card reader with PC/SC compatibility? Sorry if I'm asking a stupid question, but I've never developed anything hardware-specific, so if anyone has any knowledge or has developed a points based loyalty application in VB, then please get in touch! There may be an added bonus in there! :)

How do you communicate in the device? Do you use the product SDK? If so, I think you are designing it only for that specific device...

    Hi Jack,

I've not yet started the development, I'm waiting for the hardware and its SDK to arrive, is there a possibility of developing a generic application in vb?

    Accepted Solution

    It depends on the SDK...

There is an sdk that is generic to all the product of that particular company.

For example, for that particular company they use only one sdk for that particular product type (example Smart reader).

or they created an SDK for that particular product item only(ACR38 Smart Card Reader).

So, you should ask this before buying...

I don't think so, I think you should use c or c++ for that...

Thanks for the help with this, it seems to be a holy grail type issue, but will continue researching.
