Main PDC Server rebuild

Hi guys
I need some advice on a problem that i have, we have four independent sites with domain controllers on all four of them,(two on our main Site), our main server is in need of a re-build, it has all the PDC roles and contains all the data, what do we need to do to re-build this box without affecting out main site as well as the remaining sites, is this possible to do on a live setup our would it have to be done during off peak times, does anybody have and documentation or links on how to do this
Thanks

If you can move all the PDC roles to another controller along with the data then you can down the PDC without a problem. You could temporarily set a DNS entry to forward requests to the PDC server name to another server.

does the other domain controller have to be on the same site, some are R2 versions, do they have to be the same version, how do you set the dns entry, can you move the roles back as easily to the new rebuilt box

You can mix R2 and earlier versions although you may need to update schemas on older systems for compatibility. The files for updating are usually on R2 CDs.
You can reverse the role switch in the same way.
You can edit a DNS entry on your internal DNS server that points to the name of the PDC by changing the IP address to the 'temporary server'.
