VMware and viruses etc

Hello all,
Ive just started to experiment with VMWare for testing, and have a question. Is there anything I can do on the guest machine that could compromise the host machine? For example, if the guest became infected with a virus is there a chance that it could spread to the host given that physically its the same machine and HD?
