Could you be more specific ?

Do you want the max no of NICs which an ESX Host can support ot the max number of vNICs a VM can support ?

No ... with vSphere (next version of ESX) .. your VM can have 10 NICS ... can't wait for it to come ... hopefully on 21 May 2000

ESX3.5 can support 20 NIC ports (physical ports) I have had 24 functioning fine but it's not supported.
We do however use 20 interfaces on our core farm.
Yep that's a lot of Cat6 cables.

May 21st is the day you can start buying licenses for ESX4/vSphere, but it has not announced a date yet for when it will become available for download..As mentioned above you will be able to have 10 nics per VM like you can do today with VMware Workstation and VMware Server.

If you are using Intel e100 NICS, you can have a maximum of 26 NICS., if its e1000, then 32 can be used, if its Broadcom then only 20 NICs are supported for use in an ESX Host.

Check Page 4 in this doc - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35u2/vi3_35_25_u2_config_max.pdf

That is for physical nics on the host, not virtual nics in the guest as OP requested.
