What is best practice for LTO tape retirement?

How have you determined how many uses for LT0 tapes before retiring tapes?

Some manufacturers say the lifetime of an LTO tape is 25 years or 20,000 loads, whichever comes sooner.

Others say the tape is good for a million passes , which comes out to  about 16000 complete reads.

I think a safe bet is to use the tape for a year then either put it into long term storage or replace it.

I'd say use them until you start getting errors on them, you should be able to see the error statistics through your backup software.
