Just an FYI....
The next step would be to do a repair (which resolved your issue). Also, sometimes with Word issues check to see if it happens in only one local user profile or all...if one then removing and recreating the profile resolves issues too.

can you give more info..are you using a MS Office trial version...or did you buy a new PC with it installed, but need to purchase before full operation mode...what are you trying to save?

This may be because either you haven't activated Microsoft Office or somehow it deactivated. Go Help -> (and some menu item, I think about or something that says grayed items) and it should tell you more. That is typical of Word viewer also!

Office 2003 Professional Edition SP2 local installation.
Actually, I am a new member and wanted to test this site.  As it happens I was able to fix this issue today myself by running the MSOffice Repair Tool.  I was wondering what might have caused it to go gray in the first place.

Sometimes normal.dot template file gets corrupted and can result in greyed out menu items.

Yup, I tried renaming the normat.dot to normal.old, id did not do the trick.  Sorry. But thanks for the suggestion.
