tftp ios transfer query

I transferred an IOS image to a cisco router remotely ... While the transfer was taking place, i noticed quite a few ..... Like you it displays !!!!! when IOS is being copied ... When I did mine, it was like !.!.!.!.!!.!!
I now will be reloading this router to have the new IOS take effect .... just wanted to ask if it's gonna mess up anything or do those .... mean it would be corrupted or something ?

Greetings nabeel92,

I too have often wondered about that, but in my experience with the !!!.!.!.!!..!!.., I've seen no failures. I always thought it just might be due to latency or the router not correctly reporting the 'real-time' status of the copy. Good luck, let us know how things turn out.

It's just one of those things that aren't detailed in the training manuals or documentation. Best of luck!!

TFTP is an unreliable application (UDP) and as you know the ethernet is not the safest road for packets to travel. Therefore some packets might get lost.
If you have a new router try to copy the IOS to usb or if your flash is a pcmcia card try to use a card reader to copy the IOS. Its more safe and ofcourse easier and faster.

The "." means an acknowledgment was not received for a transmitted segment or a timeout occurred. If there are enough of these events, the transfer will abort.

In your case, they were intermittent and recovered. If there were a problem with the file after the transfer, the CRC check would have failed and that would have been displayed.

If the transfer didn't abort and you didn't get a CRC failure, then the file successfully transferred.
