Can I use google maps api and kml without using a file?

I'm planning a little web application mostly using php as that is what I am familiar with. The idea is to general a kml document on-the-fly and display it on a google map. From the examples I've seen, it is also possible to write a kml file from php, and it is possible to display kml files via the google maps api. Therefore it would be possible to write a application to combine these two by way of a temporary kml file on the server, but is there anyway I could avoid having a temporary kml file? if so... how?

Never used google maps to display a kml file, but I'm guessing you pass the api a URL to the kml file. All you should have to do is pass a URL to a php file along with some variables in the querystring.
The php file just has to general the kml dynamically from the variables in the querystring. Just to make sure set the content-type is set to "application/vnd.google-earth.kml+xml"
