Is is possible to trace a Windows DLL "activity"

We got a couple of DLL from a supplier
These are used by a Java application to interface with some external devices
We get a Java exception that does not tell exactly what is happening, but clearly it is related to the DLL
Is there a way to tell Windows, prior to start the application, to activate some trace at the Windows OS level so that we know if the DLL is correctly loaded etc...

This can trace process I/O events such as file read/writes:

I understand that it is not really possible to do it
