vps or shared host for large downloads?

Hi, I'm looking for hosting advice.

I'm currently having problems using 1and1's shared hosting for the website of my record label : www.mikrowave.co.uk . Users are complaining of downloads freezing at 2mb or not starting at all. Especially for the larger promotional downloads such at this page http://www.mikrowave.co.uk/elementsx/elements1.html

Does anyone have advice on whether getting a VPS will sort this problem out, or is it just a case of getting a better shared host than 1and1? I can't afford to go to the level of a dedicated server yet.

there might be sometimes simultaneously 10 or 20 people downloading, but normally less than that.

and of course, any recommendations of companies would be appreciated- though please try to recommend more than one so at least i know you aren't just selling your own.

I recommend a dedicated hosting plan rather then VPS for your scenario.
I would ask 1and1 what is their limit to simultaneous downloads on each of their plans.  Your problems are most likely coming from hardware limitations, especially on a basic shared plan, but before you sign up for an expensive dedicated or VPS solution, check what their limits are first.

Also, just to throw this out, we are currently looking into Media Temple (switching from AIT).  We have no affiliation nor previous experience with them, but their shared hosting implementation sounds promising in theory.  Our main reason to wanting to switch to them was for easy support of wordpress.

If anything, call around to several hosts and ask them about their limitations.  If you aren't locked into a contract with 1and1, it may be worth it to just try someone else.  You will never truly know until you try unfortunately (or you know someone else that has a working setup).

A final thought, have you considered cloud computing with Amazon?

Again, I have no previous experience with either hosts but thought I could give you some fresh ideas.

You can try with VPS, if it doesn't work either, you can upgrade it to dedicated server. Most of the hosting companies will do the migration for free. You can try www.veryserv.com .
