The HOSTS file does not contain any files, only IP addresses and URLs in text form. The HOSTS file can be used to block advertisements, malware, parasites, drive-by installers, etc, tho' very few people take advantage of this extremely powerful file, so it's usually empty and not helping you at all.

It's quite possible that you recently modified the HOSTS file yourself, or by using a third-party security program that modifies it for you. As a result, you may have given the program the OK to do something with the HOSTS file that blocks you from connecting to the .NET servers. Reverse what you did with the program, or REM out the line manually and you should be able to logon again.

You can also try an uninstall or upgrade.

go here
C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc
Open the file   hosts
With notepad.

It should look like this.

If you have any more entries besides the

127.0.0.1       localhost

Then post them here.

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Sorry that would be
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

(I have a custom installed system, so my XP is WINNT instead of WINDOWS)
