Quicken, Windows Sidebar Apps no longer update

For some reason my sidebar accuweather gadget no long updates and my Quicken gives an error when attempting to update my accounts.  I can access all other websites - i am now entering information into this website but for an unknown reason, some applications do not have access to the internet.  Help!

Additional information.  I use VMware.  I have no virtual machines running but there are two "unidentified" network connections that are tied to my virtual machines.  I have rebooted my computer several times.  I have included a image of my network.

VMWare adds a virtual network adapter, which is why you see the "Unidentified network" in the Network and Sharing Center.   This is normal.

As for gadgets not updating ... this is also a fairly common issue.   Usually you can resolve it by closing the gadget and then re-adding it to the sidebar; although I've found that some are far more resilient than others (I tried several weather gadgets and stock market gadgets before finding two that retain their connections very well => e.g. I use ProWeather instead of AccuWeather for that very reason).

... one other thought:  Uninstalling VMWare and then reinstalling it can also help with networking issues that are induced by its virtual adapter => doing this won't impact any of your virtual machines or your registration info (it's retained in the registry even if you uninstall).

OK.  I uninstalled VMware. I still have the problem.  My sidebar weather gadget does not work and Quicken will not update.  I really do not care too much about the gadget.  I do care about being able to update Quicken.  It is definitely very weird.  As far as i know, I can do anything else like surf the net.  Windows does not indicate there is an error with the network connection.  

Is there a log I can check to see if there is a problem - other then the even log?  The event log shows nothing.

OK.  I figured it out.  I have internet explorer setup so that when I connect to work via VPN it will access my work's intranet.  This requires proxy settings, etc.  So when I changed my LAN settings from "Use automatic configuration script" to "Automatically detect settings" and unchecked "Use a proxy server for your LAN...", Quicken and the gadget started working again.  Therefore, these applications must use IE LAN settings to connect to the internet....

So problem solved.  WIll now reinstall WMware!
