Data Entry Web Application Running Slow

I have a web application that is used primarly as a data entry application.  There is a delay when loading the form and saving a form.  The dropdown boxes all run from sqldatasoure controls along with a sqldatasource control that runs for the entire form that keeps track of the current record.  I am trying to figure out the best way to speed up the database calls.  Is the best thing to do caching?  Would using web services help at all?  I am using the new Q1 2009 Telerik controls and that has made a difference but any ideas to make the page load faster would be very helpful.

    Assisted Solution

assuming your database quries are not consuming time (since getting data for the drop down lists should not return that many rows) i would suggest you try to chage the way your page load.
let the page load and once it is loaded, use ajax in order to access the database and populate the list controls
try to do it in parallel and it will save you time

    Accepted Solution

How would I do this?  Doesn't the select for sqldatasources run onder the prerender of the control it is attached to anyway so that would be after the page load anyway.
