Local machine slow when connected to VPN

While connected through Cisco VPN, or Windows PPTP connection my local machine takes about 1 minute to respond to anything.  This includes opening programs, to navigating files, to pretty much anything.  Immediately after disconnecting from the VPN, the computer "catches up" and does all the commands I told it before hand.  Take note, this is on my LOCAL machine, not on any remote machine im accessing.

On the Windows PPTP connection you could try going to the properties of the connection, then clicking on networking. Go to the properties of TCP\IP and click on advanced. Uncheck the box that says "Use default gateway on remote network"

See if that helps.
