ntoskrnl.exe corrupt after Vista SP1 upgrade

After running the stand-alone version of the SP1 update it reboots and gives ntoskrnl.exe corrupt.

I am able to restore using the install disk, but it shows that SP1 hasn't been loaded.

All updates to this point have been run.  Microsoft update wants to run SP1 now.  I've run the System update checker and it comes up clean.

This is on a HP mini notebook 2133.

That is for the same problem after uninstalling SP1.

It does have a link to a possible solution:
Run chkdsk C: /F (replace C: with your system drive)
As well as suggesting stopping all spyware/virus software.

Hi -
Several steps to help ensure successful SP1 install -
SP1 FAQ

SP1 Readiness Tool
I would suggest that you run SFC - System File Checker - bring up an elevated cmd/DOS prompt -
START | type cmd.exe | right-click on cmd.exe  above under programs | select Run as Admin | type sfc /scannow - re-boot when complete to allow repair of files that cannot be done while system running.

Run the Vista Cleaning Manager Utility - from an elevated cmd/DOS prompt -type cleanmgr tuneup -  Check the following boxes:
- Temp Setup Files
- Downloaded Program Files
- Temp Internet Files
- Recycle Bin
- System error memory dump files (NOT the next line - minidump files)
- Temp Files
- Temp Windows Installation Files

Defrag the hard drive - use a product like Auslogics - Auslogics download

If Internet Security product installed it s/b removed.  Please let me know which anti-virus/ firewall you are running.
Then go to Windows Updates and allow SP1 to install.

Sorry for the delay in answering.  I've been trying to get a hold of the computer without success for the last while.  I should be able to work on this early next week.
