how to run a fresh copy of xp and my keep is not responding not sure of it the bios

i have a compaq pc and im trying to run a fresh copy of xp on it, its like i have to pull out the usb keyboard and put it back in to make it recognize the keyboard to boot from the cd sometime it will boot from the cd and set like its going to run then the xp get to the point where it asks to hit enter to continue to install but when i hit enter it doesnt go its like it stops working with the keyboard again... i ve tried booting for the floppy and that doesnt work either i get the disk error so im just lost at this point i think something is wrong with my bois but not sure

Do you have an older PS2 keyboard you could plug in and try?

If not, have you tried pressing whatever key you need to press upon boot up (maybe the Delete key, or F1) to get into the BIOS and see what settings you might be able to play with for USB. Maybe you need to enable legacy USB 1.1 -- some BIOSes have that setting....
