I am trying to migrate a Windows SBS 2003 Premium Server R2 to Windows SBS 2008 Premium on a new box. I am getting the following error:

SBS Server 2008 Premium was not promoted to a domain controller.

I am attaching the log here. The domain name was changed, but otherwise it is the actual file. What do I need to do to get this working? Do you need any other info from me?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I am trying to do the install with the answer file on a USB stick...it does the install in Migration Mode and then fails when it tries to do the DCPromo_JoinDomain:

The server was not promoted to a domain controller.

I have been working on removing the new server from the AD of the old server incase that is interfering.

The IP address of SBS 2008 along with the gateway need to be specific.

Does SBS 2003 have only 1 NIC and a router is in place?

Did you run the prep steps on the source server:
+ Verify SP level for both Win2K3 and Exchange (both should be SP2).
+ Verify that your domain and forest are 2003 native.
 + SBS Best Practices Analyzer.
+ Source Prep Tool from SBS 2008 DVD.

Go get the EBS tool to install and run on your source server. It will give you some in-depth information on the health of your source network:

Yes. Service Pack 2 on both. SBS Best practice does not reveal any issues. Source Prep was done and then answer file created.

So the error has now changed after I cleaned up the Source server AD and ran the install again...see attached log.

Is DNS on the source server AD integrated?

Other than the initial stall, does SBS 2008 come up with AD setup on it? Is it a DC?

I am not sure about the answer to your first question. How do I check to see if the DNS is integrated. I believe the server points to itself for DNS.

SBS 2008 is not prompting me for any AD setup, but it is listed as a DC.

Did this fail because the Source server is a Global Catalog or because of some DNS error?

On SBS 2003, open the DNS snap-in and bring up the properties for the sbsdomain.local. It will tell you whether it is AD integrated or not.

It is looking like there is something goofy with AD. Global Catalog is correct as it stands.

It is integrated.

It told me in the log above that there is an issue with the fact that it is a Global Catalog.

I am restoring the system state to try again.

Having trouble doing the restore so I am going to pick it up in the morning. I am wondering if the process failed at the end and it is something I can correct on the SBS 2008 server. It has the FSMO roles and is a DC. It just just had the errors in the attached document above.
