Update Deployment in systmen Center Configuration Manager

I cannot get my MS updates to deploy in configuraion manager. I  am running it on server 08 and deploying to xp station and 03 servers. I have created the templates and the update list and check the logs of both and they where successful but when i go to see if any updates have deployed they are just setting there with no status. All deployment packages have been successful and im not sure what's going on and why it's not deploying when i run the schudule. Please help thanks

You won't get status back right way on update deployments initiated by the software updates deployment evaluation cycle...not until the software updates scan cycle takes place on the client.  They don't run side by side so there is less stress on the network.
*Correction: software update inventory scan

Not in front of my SCCM server at the moment :)

I figured that i may have to wait a bit but i have waited for 3 weeks and still nothing so there must be a problem why it's not deploying can you think of any reason why it may not deploy. I have notice that i don't have the feature in the control panel to inciate deploy do i need that? if so how do i get that into the control panel? thanks
3 weeks, yeah...that's long enough :)  Start with the simple stuff:
Is the software updates client agent enabled under Site Database>Site Management>[your site]>Site Settings>Client Agents?
Do you have a schedule setup here?  What is the interval?
Yes the client agent is enabled under site database and set ever 7 days. Also all the MS updates are there to deploy and templates are created and update list is create without fail. My deployment package was created and has the MS updates in them but when i run the deploy process nothing happens. I have been working on this for months it seems that everything works except when i deploy for some reason. Again i don't have any feature in my control panel to inciate a deploy and i know i seen that in some video but i don't know if i need that or where to install it or how to install it. If that helps any. Boy do i feel stupid on this one :)
What does C:\windows\system32\ccm\logs\UpdatesDeployment.log show on the sample PC?
I'm running server 08 and i don't see a updates deployment log in that location is there another place i should look for that?. Also i attach a few of the logs that i thought might be helpful in solving this problem. thanks
ccm.log
ciamgr.log
ccmsetup.log
DMPSetup.log
Doesn't even look like you have the client installed...
Source \\prolease.com\dfs\prolease\prolease\IT\Kevin- Workfiles\sms server03\SMS2003_SP3_Eval\SMSSETUP\CLIENT\I386 is inaccessible (5) ccmsetup 5/5/2009 2:57:11 PM 800 (0x0320)

Looks like you installed the SMS 2003 client at some point, then went to SCCM?  You should remove the SMS Client currently on the PC and install the ccmsetup.exe from your "new" SCCM server since it appears to be looking for source files from SMS 2003.
Start with one PC.  Grab CCMCLEAN.EXE from  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sms/bb676787.aspx.  This uninstall program will only work for SMS 2003 clients.  Do not use it on SCCM 2007 clients.  Remove the old SMS 2003 client and then install the fresh one from your new server.
Ok i will try this and get back with you thanks.
Hello,
i had to rebuild my server so it's been a process to get it re-installed sorry it's taken so long to get back with you. I have re-install config manager on a different system and everything seemed to ok except im getting waiting to install messege when i check the report log. Im not sure if it will take a few days to work or not so i have attach the logs for you to view to see if there is another problem that may issits. thanks
ccm.log
ciamgr.log
distmgr.log
Looks like you have some problems with the distribution point or at least with package AHR00003.  You probably want to look at that package.  The rest looks OK.
Can you tell me what folder it should be deploying from? maybe i have the deployment template pointing to the wrong location. What i did was share the smspksig folder and give it promission is that correct? then i created the template in config manager to deploy from there. But it looks like all my MS Updates downloads are in C:\ Programfiles\confuration manager share folder is that where i should have had it try to pull from?
Each package should have its own unique directory
Does \\ccmtest\sms_ahr exist?  The package should really be \\ccmtest\sms_ahr\someuniquedir.  If you're pointing all packages to the same folder, that will be a major issue.
Yes it exist and has all the MS updates downloaded into it. I will create a sub dir as you suggested and see if it works thanks.
doesn't seem to work any other ideas?
Im still getting install pending message. everytime i download updates it seems to put the package in the SMSPKGC$ folder. When i create the template i direct it to the share folder \\ccmtest\sms_ahr that i gave the access rights to. So even if i move the folder to the share folder \\ccmtest\sms_ahr it still says install pending and will not deploy. When i check the report in config manager it says file extension may be to long or not enough disk space. I have 35gigs of space so im sure thats not it. Help please thanks
Don't move folders manually!!!  SCCM will copy your source directory to SMSPKGC$ and will deploy the updates from SMSPKGC$.
Here's an example directory for one of my update templates:
\\myserver\install\Microsoft.Patch.MS08-078.December.17.2008\DP
\\myserver\install won't cut it.
Each template needs its own directory UNDER sms_ahr.  Do not move around folders to or from SMSPKGC$.
ok now it's not saying install pending anymore this is what the report says  SMS Distribution Manager successfully distributed package "AHR00004" to distribution point "["Display=\\ASTRA4\"]MSWNET:["SMS_SITE=AHR"]\\ASTRA4\".   So im not sure if it's deploying to any of my workstation or not because when i check the reports it doesn't say anything. But it none of the templates failed. So does it take time for it to deploy or is there something else i need to do to deploy the updates besides creating the deployment packages and setting the time because i did the and it was successful and i set it to run asap. IS there anything else i need to do to get the updates to my workstations. thanks
Give it some time...like at least 24 hours.
which log do i look at to see if the updates are deploying? and after 24hr if nothing happens then what should i look at? thanks
Check C:\windows\system32\ccm\logs\UpdatesDeployment.log on the client itself.
i check the updates deployment log and nothing has installed
I would check the deployment under deployment management in the SCCM console.  Click on the Schedule tab.
Is a deadline set?
Are you using maintainence windows?   If you are, the update will only run doing those maintainence windows.  If the PC is off during a maintainence window the updates won't run.
Are the updates in your deployment appliciable to the PC's operating system?
the schedule was set to run updates at 3:15pm est. yesterday may 12th. there is no deadline set. And im not using maintainence windows i don't think or how can i check that out? And the updates are appliciable to my windows Xp machines.
If you didn't set them up, you don't have them.
Set a deadline of today, wait 15 minutes and then run the software update actions on the client to see if you get anything.
Maybe i wasn't clear when i look at conf manager deployment manager and go to schedule i can set the date and time. when i click on the software update tab i can see all the MS updates there so i believe that they are all there but when i look at the report and the log there is no deployment to workstations maybe i just haven't waited long enough for it to happen not sure. Im going to change the schedule to run asap again as i did yesterday and see if any deploys got out to my workstations.
also would if cause a problem if im running WSUS and have a schudule for deploy on Thurs nights there?
Having another WSUS server on the same network will be a problem.  To do updates using SCCM, you need to install the server bits of WSUS on top of your SCCM install.  If you check WUAHandler.log on the client, you want the WUA policy set to your SCCM server, not to your existing WSUS server.
You probably want to move this server into a test environment with a test PC on its own subnet to get it working, as you don't want to change your WSUS settings to point to the SCCM server and not have them work.
Here's a walk through: http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/cstauffer/archive/2008/01/18/how-to-install-wsus-on-sccm-central-site.aspx
Make sure you configure WSUS through the SCCM console and not the WSUS console that pops up at the end of the install.
ok so are there instruction that will guide me through setting up AD to deploy to SCCM console? as i do with my WSUS. And after i make that change and remove the link from wsus will it automatic deploy as WSUS does via AD policy? thanks
Actually, you want to set your WSUS setting to none using the GPMC.  Looks like the SCCM client sets a local policy to set the WSUS server and if you have a group policy that sets it, SCCM can't enable the local policy.
Question: As i understand from wally you can set WSUS also through GPO? will this overwrite
whatever WSUS it was assigned to through the local policy?
Answer: Yes, Group Policy will overwrite local policy. The follow on to this is that after client
installation via WSUS, you need to either filter out or remove the GPO object on the clients that have
the client installed successfully if you want to use the Software Updates feature. Without this clients
will not start their scan using the Config Mgr assigned (local policy) WSUS / SUP server. You could use
a WMI filter on the Group Policy to accomplish this.

Ok i have removed the GPO for WSUS and added a GPO for SCCM and set it up to deploy several times and still nothing. Im not sure what the deal is because all the templates say the completed sucessfully and when i do a deployment to my windows xp group there are no errors in the deployment update log. Any clue what could be the problem?
one more thing is that in my control panel in the configuration manger in the actions tab i only have machine policy retrieval and evaluation cycle, user policy retrieval evaluation cycle, i don't have the inciate scan listed there. This is a evaluation software that im using if that helps.
Check C:\windows\system32\ccm\logs\ClientIDManagerStartup.log to see if it registered with the server (likely didn't).
I have attach the files but im not sure how to fix the problem. I have try to re-install the client but that didn't work
ClientIDManagerStartup.log
UpdatesDeployment.log
It's really strange that this is still not deploying could there be a policy that is keeping this from working? I have already removed the OU policy in WSUS and SCCM could it be another policy on my network perhaps. thanks
It's not registered with SCCM, so it isn't going to do anything until you get it talking to the MP.
From the logs, it looks like it can't find the site code.  Did you extend the AD schema for SCCM?  Did you get SCCM computer rights to the SYSTEM OU?
no i didn't extend the AD schema is that necessary? for it to work. I will check the System OU maybe that's the issue. thanks
Hello,
I tried the SLP method and still didn't work so do you have any documentation on how to extend the AD schema? We are just a small company and just testing so it's shouldn't take to long to do it i hope. thanks
Yes:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680608.aspx

You need to be part of Schema Admins to run the executable.
thanks do i run this exe on the domain controller or the system center server?
Shouldn't matter: as long as the SCCM as access to Active Directory, you run it from the SCCM server.
just two question any chance you can remotely look at my test server and see what the problem is? and also do you think extending the schema in AD will fix my problem as you have look at all my log files? thanks
You might want to look at this thread:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/Systems_Management_Server/Q_24421700.html
If you don't/can't extend the schema, you can pass the service locations via command options as given by the above thread.
In terms of connecting to your server: it's against the EE rules to help outside the threaded Q&A method.  There's also the liability of messing up your services which I don't want to be responsible for. :)
The option for extending the schema to get this to work for me is out so i need to find another way to get the updates to deploy. Accourding to the link you sent above i needed to to add more to my site code and i did. Here is and example of it.  SMSSITECODE=AHR_SMS=ASTRA4.PROLEASE.COM  This didn't work at this point i don't know what to do to get the updates to deploy to my workstations. It's clear that i must be missing something im just not sure what it is. Help please thanks
AHR_SMS sounds like the SCCM SQL Database, not the site code.  If you open the SCCM admin console, to right of site database, it should say:
Site Code - Server name - Site Boundary
Example:
AHR - ASTRA4 - Corporate
So your commandline would be:
ccmsetup.exe SMSSITECODE=AHR SMSMP=astra4.prolease.com SMSSLP=astra4
If the CCM client is already installed, remove it and reinstall with the above options.
