I am new to Visual Studio Web Developer 2008. Can any one tell me why the very simple insert query gives me an error, please see attached file.

you need to put the values in quotes:
Insert into table (field) values ("value")

corrected code:
insert into Table1 (city, state, country) values ('lodi','nj','usa')
