Why do some router's block the external IP

Hi can anyone tell me why som routers block the external IP address
when working internally , & some like netgear don't
& if there is away of allowing it to

So you're saying that when you're on the internal network and you try to ping the external IP of your router ... some routers let you and others don't?  AFAIK it's just the way each company chooses to make each router.  On all the home-grade routers I've played with I haven't seen an option to change it.  And I never know why some choose to do it and others don't.
