VSS not working on server running Exchange 2007 Standard and Server 2003 Standard x64

Hi There

I'm having a problem where I want to do backups with either VMWare Converter (Remotely) or NTbackup (Locally). VSS is not working.

I get the following error in NTBackup: Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy: 0xffffffff

I get this error in VMWare Converter: [snapshotVolumeFactory,119] Shapshot creation failed. driver=vss

I've tried re-registering all the dll's again, all successful except msxml.dll and msxml4.dll which is normal according to the blogs, and reboot, but it doesn't work. When I run "vssadmin list writers", nothing is returned.

I can start all the services successfully eg. VSS and SWPRV.

These are the commands I ran to register the dll's as per microsoft and lots of other blogs:

cd to windows\system32

net stop vss
net stop swprv
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
vssvc /register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll

This happened after I installed update roll up 6 on the server. Could this have caused the problem?

What can I do to fix it?

Regards and Thanks

I managed to fix it by doing the following:

1.      Click Start, click Run, type Regedit, and then click OK.
2.      Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
3.      On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the subkey.
4.      Exit Registry Editor.
5.      Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
6.      Right-click the following services one at a time. For each service, click Restart:
o      COM+ Event System
o      COM+ System Application
o      Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider
o      Volume Shadow Copy
7.      Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
8.      At the command prompt, type vssadmin list writers, and then press ENTER.
9.      If the VSS writers are now listed, close the Command Prompt window. You do not have to complete the remaining steps.

If the VSS writers are not listed, type the following commands at the command prompt. Press ENTER after each command.
o      cd /d %windir%\system32
o      net stop vss
o      net stop swprv
o      regsvr32 ole32.dll
o      regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
o      regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
o      regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
o      vssvc /register
o      regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
o      regsvr32 es.dll
o      regsvr32 stdprov.dll
o      regsvr32 vssui.dll
o      regsvr32 msxml.dll
o      regsvr32 msxml3.dll
o      regsvr32 msxml4.dll
Note The last command may not run successfully.
10.      At the command prompt, type vssadmin list writers, and then press ENTER.
11.      Confirm that the VSS writers are now listed.

After step 6 Mine worked.
