Throw 410 error code upon request

Last week, one of our websites got spammed. We promptly removed the material. Today, one of our servers experienced a ton of traffic from random hosts looking for those files (probably to download them and serve them up). We would like to present them with a 410 error when they try to access certain directories. How can we go about doing this? We are running apache2 on Ubuntu Linux Server edition. The website is a virtualhost on that server. Thank you.
