how to call http handler from asp.net web form

I have a web  form which has a button, and when user clicks on  this button i want to call handler which is in my website project only.
and this handler returns a string which i want to catch in  the web page and show it to the user.

how can i do this

what language is the handler in?  is it javascript or something?

it is in asp.net C# 2.0
