I configured putty to create a tunnel. I normally tunnel to my house and use my home linux as a proxy, however as i was traveling once. I was able to log in to the SSH server however I was unable to pass any traffic. What could cause this behavior?

Is this the sock proxy functionality?

Was it your laptop or on someone else's machine?

Are you doing DNS lookup on your end or the remote end. Some sites may do things with DNS, and potentially you had dns problems at the other end.

I normally can get to my proxy with no problem from anywhere, however at this one particular site I was able to log on but getting to any web page would not work

GREAT POINT, i put a sniffer to watch my traffic and found that DNS resolution was happening locally. I changed the settings in mozilla to look for DNS remotely. In the mozilla address bar type: about:config then press enter. scroll down until you see network.proxy.socks_remote_dns, then double-click until the value changes to "true" restart browser and now i was able to use remote dns and web proxy through the tunnel.
