On my WAMP server I can call $_SESSION['var'] simply by $var.  I don't like this.  It's impressice and it also breaks on my LAMP box.

How can I disable this?

I believe you want to turn off register_globals in the php.ini configuration.

In your php.ini file, look for register_globals and set to Off:
register_globals = Off
