You could have a hidden form

<form name="createword" style="display:none" action="create-word.php" target="_blank" method="post">
   <input type="hidden" name="html" />
</form>

<input type="button" onclick="createWord()" />

<script type="text/javascript">
function createWord() {
  document.forms['createword'].html.value = document.getElementById('print_to_word').innerHTML;
  document.forms['createword'].submit();
}
</script>

Then you have to have your word creation script use the $_POST['html'] as its document content.
