Greetings

The new hp laserjet and mfp generation do no longer have this default= Tray x option which you maybe are used to from older models. The new models work with paper types and the logic is like this:

Assuming a job is printed with default driver settings which are
- Paper source: Automatically select
- Paper type unspecified.

- when a printjob arrives with these settings the device will look into each tray in reverse order, meaning the highest tray first to the lowest tray number.

- if it finds a tray which does match paper size and paper type setting (on the device) is PLAIN then it does take that tray. This is for copying and printing.

An example would be:

At the device
Tray 1: not used, or just used for special paper sometimes
Tray 2: letterhead paper letter/A4 format
Tray 3: letter/A4 plain paper
Tray 4: 11x17/A3 plain paper
Tray 5: letter/A4 plain paper

So sending a printjob with above mentioned default seetings or making a copy job without choosing a tray (just hit copy button) in letter/A4 would select tray 5 first, if tray 5 would be empty it would switch to tray 3 as it has the right size and plain paper papertype set. If tray 3 would be empty as well, the printer will stop (default setting) and the ask the user to insert paper on the diplay (this behaviour can be changed in the printer configuration). Same for copying.

hope this helps :)
cheers
