No login dialog after returning from screen saver on Windows XP Pro SP3

Hi,
I have the following effect on one of our Lenovo Laptops (T200) running Windows XP Pro SP3 and the setup is as follows:

After 15 minutes of inactivity the screen saver is activated and requires the user to enter his password again. Now the problem.

From time to time (and not every time!) - after moving the mouse, etc. - the desktop does not show the dialog box to reenter the password. It just shows a clean desktop background - no icons, no taskbar, just the mouse pointer, which is movable.

Even pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL or any other key combination show no response. No taskmanager, no explorer via WIN-E, etc. Connecting via RDP or VNC over the network is working but makes no difference.

I have already checked:
- event logs
- disabled unneeded services
- checked with hijackthis and removed BHOs from explorer (see attached hijackthis logfile from april)
- deactived add-ons from IE7

Has anyone some idea what the root cause of this behavior could be? Is there a known situations on Windows XP on which the password dialog box doesnt show up after screen saver?

I hope somebody can help me - thankx!

Regards, Dirk

Is it the windows screensaver or the IBM security software?  I've run into issue with all the junk software IBM has and removed it all. That let everything work as it should.

I have deactivated the fingerprint reader software from IBM and also disabled the security features via the services.msc. But I did not removed the whole security software.

On 8 additional IBM/Lenovo laptops the security software just runs fine without problems.

Any other suggestions?

Tweak UI is a microsoft product to further customize XP. Use that to set the screen saver grace period a little higher. Then run a test. does it do the same once you stop the screen saver right as it starts.
Also remove the password requirement and try that as a test.

You may also want to change the screensaver itself to see if it's the Logon.scr that is the problem. use this link.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314493

I'll review the hijack this log.

Ok, type msconfig and go to the 'startup' tab and remove (uncheck) all non-essantial (keep firewall, antivirus) such as igfper, hp, iTunesHelper.exe, anything ibm

reboot and test the screensaver. There's a million IBM services running and I'm thinking it's one of those. If everything works you can go back to msconfig, enable all, then uninstall anything IBM (except drivers)

Sorry for the delay. The problem is related to iTunes (some subsystem) stuff in combination with Lenovo/IBM system tools.

As far as i know the problem seems to be gone. Either by updating iTunes or updating some Lenovo software.

Anyway - thankx for your ideas!
