if both systems are on the same internal network the PIX shouldn't be involved at all. Are both systems on the same subnet? Can the systems otherwise see each other - try a ping from the system you are trying to telnet from. If that times out can you post the network settings (internal IPs, subnets, gateways)?

Both system are on the same subnet and gateways. when i try to telnet it goes straight into C:\>telnet smtpserver 25
Connecting To smtpserver...Could not open connection to the host, on port
25: Connect failed

Does it wait on 'Connecting To smtpserver' for awhile and then display 'Could not open...' or does it all happen right away?

If you could do a simple ping test (ping smtpserver) from a command prompt that would be a good idea just to make sure the network connectivity is there.
