Was visiting my daughter and they had this computer problem.  I posted it to get help but in the meantime due to the urgency of the situation, it was needed to produce several documents for a home school graduation,  it was taken to a computer shop to have it repaired.  They recovered the necessary files and then reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled the system software.  This solved the problem.

If you have any type of Xp CD, then your best bet, short of a re-install or repair install, will be to go through a manual registry restore process. This is equivalent to doing a system restore. Look here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

Print out the instructions first. You may want to follow the advice of creating a batch file for 2 of the steps to save some work. Barring faulty memory, this will allow the system to be started correctly.
