Internet Explorer 8 hangs

I've got IE 8.0.6001.18702 on Winxp SP3

Frequently when launching a new tab, that tab will hang only displaying "Connecting..."  The progress bar at the bottom just stops.  I can leave it there for several minutes and no error occurs.  I can open up new tabs, and eventually one will not hang.

I've disabled *all* add-ons and the behavior persists.  I've reset all the settings from the advanced tab more than once, but the problem is still there.

Any suggestions to fix this?

Maybe try opening Dial-a-fix (http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles), click all checkboxes under the "Registration center" section and click "GO"

That program reports that it doesn't recognize my version of Internet Explorer... The last release date is 2006, so no surprise.

Wonder if there's any connection with the selection of  'Favorites'.  See this previous thread>

IE8 Hangs on "Add to Favorites"

Or try resetting your browser to the default settings >

Does it only happen when you open a new tab? Does it happen when you open a new window?

It can happen in either case.

Also, if a tab hasn't "hung" I can navigate without problems.  But any new tab that hangs will be unresponsive no matter what site I try to go to.

Also, check here:

It's for beta but it might work. It shouldn't hurt.

Also, Spybot might cause the problem if you have it.

Registered the DLL, will wait and see if it fixes it.  Haven't installed spybot.

It would be interesting to know approximately how long it took you initially to install IE 8, including any patches, and rebooting ... i don't pretend this article has the answers, but you may find some paragraphs of interest, particularly the install time of 45 minutes!

"Internet Explorer 8 Review":
http://briancarper.net/tag/internet-explorer
You may wish to consider temporarily uninstalling IE 8 and reinstalling it.

Presume you have thoroughly checked for Malware & viruses?

Still investigating ...

I don't remember offhand how long it took... I think it was considerably less than 45 mins.

I scan for malware and viruses nightly.  Nothing.

Uninstalling and reinstalling will be next.  Will report back when done.

Well when I re-installed, it took 4 minutes, not counting the reboot.  I haven't managed to hang any tabs yet, but will give it a day or so to confirm.

Sadly, the problem is still with me.  I couldn't replicate it last night, but now it's popping up regularly.  (Wonder if it has anything to do with the increased memory load since I've got a ton of programs open.)

It's conceivable, but i,m not sure ... feel i'm treading on new ground with this one, & it's still a bit of a mystery.   Only vaguely relevent item i could find was in a forum >

Any difference if you click the Compatibility View toolbar button, as mentioned here? >

I just changed the setting for "view all sites in compatibility mode" and some of the new tabs still hang.

Okay, this is odd.  I just tried starting IE in "Browse without add-ons" mode by right clicking.  Then when I click manage add-ons, there's a whole bunch there that didn't display when browsing normally.  What's that about?

Anyway, I disabled all of those, and waiting again to confirm...

If I didn't need this for work, I would have given up long ago.

IF that works, can you narrow down the add on that caused the problem? I'm curious what caused the problem. Also, send us your AutoRuns (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx) log.

It didn't seem to work.  I am still experiencing the problem.  Attached AutoRuns.

I'm also wondering if it has anything to do with installing IE8 on a new installation of XP from IE 6 (which is what I did.)

Cannot guarantee the authenticity of this information but an author here had IE 6 on his machine and wished to install IE 8.  Apparantly it was a straightforward IE 8 install to replace IE 6.   Details>>

Also, maybe try temporarily uninstalling Google Desktop/toolbar.

Google toolbar and desktop are both gone.  Will let you know soon if it helps.  For the record, if it comes down to a choice between IE8 and Google desktop, I think I'll have to go with Google... :)

It's happening again.  I'll leave the question open for another couple of days, then if there's no progress, I'll switch to IE7.

Well, I think I found the culprit.  The suggestion to uninstall the Google toolbar made me wonder if simply disabling add-ons in the IE settings was sufficient.  I disabled the AVG 8.5 LinkScanner component *from the AVG interface* and now I have been trouble free for a couple of days.  Thank you all for your help, I'm going to split the points between you if that's okay.

Yeah, that's what I was guessing. Since I saw that post that said that each tab is run in a new process, I thought something might be interfering with the creation of new iexplore.exe processes so the tabs weren't working right.

Just so you know - the same problem has been driving me nuts on several computers.
All had AVG 8.5 and this fix fixed it.

Thanks for doing the research and posting the solution.

Thanks to this post I solved the same problem, only I had McAfee Enterprise Virus Protection.  Uninstalled and solved problem.  Now I have to figure out how to install virus protection that works.
