Your first question is a bit confusing.. please cleaify it..

2. Smarthost is something where in you want all the mails from your exchange server to be routed to it..
exchange server--> Smarthost --> Internet
it can a Spam filter or some organization like Postini who would scan your outbound mails before they are send to internet -->remote domain

- if you want to set a smarthost on exchange 2003..
   create a smtp connector and there put in the smart host IP OR FQDN on it..
- if its exchange 2007, then go to properties of send connector and add the smarthost there on it..

3. routing group connectors are used when there are multiple AG and and more than 1 exchange servers.. mail flow between them will heppen through the RGC

THE 3RD AND 4TH QUESTIONS ARE ONE AND THE SAME

hope that answers all your questions

Mail relay would be ... you are granting some application to use your exchange to send mails out..
those applications do not have the ability to send mails by their own.. so thy use exchange

hardware would be some complete server which uses your exchange server to relay out or send mails to an external domain...
software relay would be some application installed on the excange server who would relay out using your exchange server...
